St Giles' Church Exhibition

As part of Holy Week we visited an exhibition at St Giles’ Church Oxford -Between Darkness & Light (featuring Mark Cazalet and Philippine Sowerby). I’ve always been interested in art that explores faith by moving beyond traditional symbols, or expresses them in an unexpected way. I thought these artists did just that.

I especially liked Mark Cazalet’s chalk drawings of trees and the way he conveyed the beauty and expectancy of that scene. All those colours, lines and shapes are there, but are usually hidden by the ordinariness of the scene, and he drew them out.

Some of the literature about the artists at the church contained a quote which summed up well the intention of his work: “The real discovery is not in finding new landscapes, but in having new eyes” - Marcel Proust

This had significance for me too. As part of lent I have been trying to do more drawing - which hasn’t been going so well over the holidays… but still - I’ve enjoyed observing common objects in a more considered way. I feel more appreciative of the world we live in.

The Beginning of Holy Week

We walked into college on the first day of the last week of term to find our lecture room transformed for Holy Week (a few weeks early but hey). The week itself was one of my favourites, there was so much variety and room for creative exploration. I also loved the lingering smell of the lilies.

Monkey Town

I’ve had my hooks out again. The crochet fever comes and goes but it’s definitely been strong lately! I’ve found it helps with the study if I stagger it with essay writing… I have been wanting to make something for Otis since I first learned he was on the way, so his first birthday was a perfect excuse to try out this little monkey.

He turned out pretty cute. But not as cute as Otis who melts my heart every time I see him on Skype xx Can’t wait to see some snaps from his birthday party!!

Little Noah

One of the joys of our church placement has been seeing Noah as he grows up (he turned one last Wednesday), and the last time we were at his house, he was so happy and playful! Pretty cute right.
